The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is evaluating the use of artificial‑intelligence enabled cameras to monitor and ensure compliance with the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) mandate across Indian vehicles.
The central Transport Ministry has announced a pilot plan to deploy AI‑driven surveillance cameras at key traffic points to verify that vehicles display the legally required High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). The HSRP scheme, introduced to curb vehicle‑related crimes, mandates a tamper‑proof, standardized plate on all new cars and two‑wheelers.
Under the proposed system, cameras equipped with image‑recognition algorithms will automatically scan licence plates, flagging any vehicle that lacks the HSRP or shows signs of tampering. The data will be relayed to a central monitoring hub where officials can take swift enforcement action.
