Authorities in Odisha have uncovered a trafficking ring that smuggled several orangutans into the state, prompting urgent calls for stronger wildlife protection measures.
Police in Odisha seized a shipment of four orangutans that had been illegally transported from Indonesia.
The animals were found in a warehouse near the city of Bhubaneswar, where authorities traced the smuggling route through a network of middlemen.
The incident has reignited concerns over the vulnerability of endangered primates to international wildlife crime.
Wildlife officials have announced a review of border controls and are coordinating with the Central Wildlife Crime Control Bureau to prosecute the traffickers.
