A dense layer of smog has settled over several areas of Mumbai, prompting health warnings and traffic disruptions.
Mumbai woke up to a thick blanket of smog covering several suburbs early Tuesday, as low temperatures and stagnant air trapped pollutants close to the ground. Meteorological officials linked the haze to a combination of winter temperature inversion and high vehicular emissions, which have intensified over the past weeks.
The most affected zones include South Mumbai, Bandra, Andheri and parts of the central business district, where visibility dropped to below 500 metres and commuters reported slower traffic flow.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board issued an advisory urging residents to limit outdoor activities, especially for children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions. Schools in the most affected areas were advised to keep windows closed and consider postponing outdoor classes.
Transport authorities have also cautioned drivers to use headlights even during daylight and maintain safe distances, while the municipal corporation has increased street cleaning to reduce dust accumulation. Health experts recommend wearing N95 masks and staying hydrated until the smog dissipates later in the day.
