Three Indian states are restructuring their electricity distribution networks to serve only agricultural consumers, aiming to improve supply reliability and reduce losses.

Telangana, Maharashtra and Haryana have announced plans to convert their existing distribution companies into agriculture‑only discoms, a move that will separate agricultural power supply from commercial and residential loads. The new structure is expected to streamline operations, reduce transmission and distribution losses, and ensure a more reliable supply for farmers.

Under the new model, each state will establish dedicated distribution networks that will cater exclusively to agricultural consumers. The changes are part of a broader strategy to address chronic power shortages in rural areas and to improve the financial health of the electricity sector.

Officials say the shift will also enable tailored tariff structures for agricultural use, potentially lowering costs for farmers while maintaining the sustainability of the grid. The reforms are slated to roll out over the next 12 to 18 months, with pilot projects already underway in select districts.
