Telangana launches TSAFE, a unified food and drugs authority, as safety reforms gain momentum

The Telangana government has created TSAFE, a single agency to oversee food and drug safety, aiming to streamline inspections and boost consumer protection.
The state of Telangana has formally instituted the Telangana State Authority for Food and Drugs (TSAFE), consolidating previously separate food and drug regulatory bodies into a single entity. The move is intended to eliminate duplication, speed up licensing processes, and ensure consistent enforcement of safety standards across the state.
Officials say the timing aligns with a broader national push for stricter food and drug oversight, following recent incidents that raised public concern over product adulteration and counterfeit medicines. By centralising data and inspection teams, TSAFE aims to detect violations earlier and impose penalties more uniformly.
The authority will operate from its headquarters in Hyderabad and will coordinate with local municipal bodies, the state health department, and the central Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Stakeholders, including manufacturers and retailers, have been briefed on the new compliance requirements, which include mandatory digital reporting of batch information.
Consumer groups have welcomed the initiative, noting that a unified regulator can provide clearer guidance and quicker redressal for complaints. The government has pledged to allocate additional resources for training inspectors and upgrading laboratory facilities to support the agency's mandate.
