Tamil Nadu's TASMAC to Adopt Digital System for Liquor Stock Ordering

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that all TASMAC retail outlets will shift to an online platform for placing liquor inventory orders, aiming to streamline procurement and curb leakages.
The state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) will transition its 5,000-plus retail outlets to a centralized digital ordering platform starting next quarter. Under the new system, shop managers will log into a web‑based portal to place real‑time requests for whisky, rum, beer and other spirits, replacing the current manual paperwork.
Officials say the move is intended to improve transparency, reduce the time taken for order processing and minimise the chances of pilferage that have plagued the traditional system. The e‑procurement tool will also generate data analytics to help the corporation forecast demand more accurately.
The rollout will be overseen by the Department of Commercial Taxes and the IT department, which will provide training to shop staff and ensure connectivity at remote outlets. The government expects the digital shift to boost revenue collection and enhance compliance with existing liquor policies.
TASMAC, which accounts for a significant share of Tamil Nadu's excise earnings, has faced criticism over alleged irregularities in stock distribution. By digitising the ordering chain, the administration hopes to address these concerns while modernising the state's liquor retail framework.
