Tamil Nadu to Launch ‘One Degree, Six Skills’ Scheme for UG Students from Jan 2027

The Tamil Nadu government will roll out the ‘One Degree, Six Skills’ programme for undergraduate students starting January 2027, aiming to integrate vocational skills with academic curricula.
The state government of Tamil Nadu announced that from January 2027 it will implement a new educational initiative called “One Degree, Six Skills.” The programme is designed to equip undergraduate students with six distinct vocational competencies alongside their regular degree studies, thereby enhancing employability.
Under the scheme, participating universities will embed skill‑based modules in existing curricula, covering areas such as digital literacy, entrepreneurship, language proficiency, technical trades, soft‑skill communication, and industry‑specific training. The government plans to collaborate with industry bodies and skill development agencies to certify the acquired competencies.
The initiative aligns with the broader national agenda to bridge the gap between higher education and job readiness. Officials indicated that the programme will be rolled out in phases, with pilot colleges identified for the 2027 academic year, followed by statewide adoption.
Students who successfully complete the six skill modules will receive a supplementary certification attached to their degree, which employers can verify through a digital platform managed by the state’s education department.
The rollout will be monitored by the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Department, which will also provide funding and technical support to institutions that adopt the new framework.
