The Tamil Nadu government has announced a new initiative that will designate one day each week for public servants to wear ethnic attire, aiming to promote cultural identity and unity among staff.

The Tamil Nadu government has unveiled a plan to make one day each week a ‘weekly ethnic wear day’ for all government employees. The move, announced by the state’s Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, is intended to encourage staff to showcase traditional Indian attire such as sarees, dhotis, kurtas and salwar suits.
The policy is part of a broader effort to foster a sense of cultural pride and unity within the public service. Officials say that wearing ethnic clothing will also help employees feel more connected to their roots and promote a positive image of the state.
Implementation will begin next month, with the first ‘Ethnic Wear Day’ scheduled for the first Monday of each week. Employees will be encouraged to wear their chosen ethnic outfits, and the department will provide guidelines on acceptable attire and dress codes.
The announcement has been welcomed by several employee unions, who view the initiative as a step toward greater cultural inclusivity. Some critics, however, have raised concerns about the enforcement of dress codes and the potential for unintended discrimination.
