The Tamil Nadu government will shift all liquor retail outlets to a digital platform starting September 1, introducing online licensing, cash‑less transactions and real‑time inventory monitoring.
The state government announced that from September 1, every licensed liquor shop in Tamil Nadu will operate through a digital system. Under the new framework, shop owners must obtain electronic licences, record sales on a centralized portal and accept payments via debit, credit or mobile wallets, eliminating the need for cash transactions.
The move aims to curb illicit sales, improve tax compliance and provide consumers with transparent pricing. Real‑time data on stock levels will be uploaded by retailers, allowing authorities to monitor supply chains and detect anomalies quickly.
Implementation will be overseen by the Tamil Nadu Excise Department, which will conduct training sessions for shop owners and set up a help‑desk for technical issues. Non‑compliance after a grace period could result in penalties or suspension of the licence.
