Sanitation workers in Tamil Nadu called off their strike after the state government agreed to 8 of their 10 demands, ending a week‑long protest that had disrupted city services.
Sanitation workers across Tamil Nadu have suspended their strike after the state government agreed to 8 of the 10 demands raised by the workers. The protest, which began last week, had caused significant disruptions to city services, including garbage collection and street cleaning.
The agreed‑upon demands include a 15% wage hike, provision of personal protective equipment, and improved working hours. The workers also sought better safety protocols and a formal grievance redressal mechanism.
The government, represented by the Minister for Labour, announced the concessions in a press briefing, stating that the agreement would be implemented within 30 days. The ministry also pledged to review the remaining two demands in a follow‑up meeting.
Workers expressed relief at the partial victory but warned that they would resume the strike if the remaining demands are not met. They have called for a meeting with the state cabinet to discuss the remaining issues.
