The Tamil Nadu government has cleared 6 am showtimes for fresh releases, prompting celebration among cinema owners across the state.

The state cabinet of Tamil Nadu approved a policy allowing movie theatres to start new‑release screenings as early as 6 a.m. The move is aimed at expanding viewing options for early‑rising audiences and boosting box‑office revenues during the opening weekend.

Industry representatives welcomed the decision, saying it will help theatres tap into a segment of moviegoers who prefer morning shows, especially in metropolitan hubs like Chennai and Coimbatore. They also noted that the extra slot could alleviate crowding at traditional evening timings.

The policy, announced through a press release, applies to all certified new releases and will be implemented from the next scheduled release date. Theatre owners are expected to adjust staffing and logistics to accommodate the early shows, while the film distributors will coordinate release schedules accordingly.

Analysts predict that the additional morning slot could add a modest but measurable lift to first‑day collections, particularly for family‑oriented and regional language films that attract a broad audience base.

The decision follows similar early‑show experiments in other Indian states, but Tamil Nadu becomes the first to formalise a statewide 6 am screening rule, marking a notable shift in the regional film exhibition landscape.
