Tamil Nadu grapples with power shortage as generation falls, causing blackouts

Tamil Nadu's power grid is under strain after the state electricity board recorded a significant drop in electricity generation this week. The shortfall, attributed to lower output from thermal and hydro plants, has forced authorities to implement rolling blackouts in several districts to balance supply and demand.
Officials said the reduction in generation stems from maintenance shutdowns and lower water levels in key reservoirs, which have curtailed hydroelectric output. Meanwhile, coal deliveries to thermal stations have faced logistical delays, further tightening the supply chain.
The blackout schedule, announced early Monday, targets industrial zones and residential areas during peak evening hours. The board urged consumers to conserve electricity and warned that the situation could persist until the upcoming monsoon replenishes reservoir levels.
State energy minister announced an emergency meeting with power producers to explore short‑term measures, including importing power from neighboring states and accelerating renewable projects. The board is also reviewing demand‑side management plans to mitigate future shortages.
