Fisherfolk from coastal villages gathered at Pattinampakkam to oppose the state government's plan to build a new secretariat on reclaimed land, citing threats to their livelihood.
A sizable group of fisherfolk assembled at Pattinampakkam on Thursday, voicing strong opposition to the Tamil Nadu government's proposal to construct a new secretariat on reclaimed coastal land. The protesters, many carrying traditional fishing nets and placards, argued that the project would encroach upon fishing zones and disrupt the marine ecosystem that sustains their families.
The proposed secretariat, intended to replace the existing administrative complex, is slated to be built on a stretch of shoreline currently used by local fishing communities. Fisherfolk claim that the development could lead to loss of access to traditional fishing grounds and increase the risk of pollution in the waters.
Organisers of the protest called for the government to reconsider the location and to engage directly with the affected communities before any construction begins. They urged state officials to explore alternative sites that would not jeopardize the livelihoods of those who depend on the sea for their daily income.
While the protest remained peaceful, participants warned that continued disregard for their concerns could lead to larger demonstrations. The state government has not yet issued an official response to the demands raised by the fisherfolk.
