Chief Minister Vijay announced that Tamil Nadu's health insurance scheme will now provide coverage of up to ₹25 lakh, up from the earlier limit of ₹5 lakh.
Chief Minister Vijay unveiled a major upgrade to Tamil Nadu's public health insurance programme, raising the maximum cashless benefit to ₹25 lakh per family. The decision, announced during a press briefing, aims to strengthen financial protection for residents against high medical expenses.
Until now, the scheme capped coverage at ₹5 lakh, a limit many beneficiaries found insufficient for major surgeries or prolonged treatments. By quintupled the ceiling, the state government expects to reduce out‑of‑pocket spending and improve access to tertiary care facilities across Tamil Nadu.
The enhancement aligns with the state's broader health‑care agenda, which includes expanding hospital networks and promoting preventive care. Officials said the revised limit will apply to all existing and new enrollees, with the implementation slated to begin within the next few weeks.
Health experts welcomed the move, noting that higher coverage can encourage earlier medical intervention and lessen the financial burden on low‑income families. The government has not disclosed additional budgetary allocations required for the expanded benefit.
