Theatre owners in Tamil Nadu have asked the state to permit screenings as early as 6 am and as late as 2 am, and the government has said it will examine the proposal.

Cinema hall operators across Tamil Nadu have formally requested permission to schedule film shows at unconventional hours – starting as early as 6 a.m. and extending up to 2 a.m. The demand, submitted through a collective industry body, cites the need to tap into untapped audience segments and counter the growing pull of streaming platforms.

The state government has acknowledged receipt of the petition and announced that it will review the feasibility of the suggested timings. Officials indicated that any decision will consider factors such as public safety, traffic management, and the impact on existing labor regulations.

Industry representatives said the extended slots could boost occupancy rates during off‑peak periods and provide greater flexibility for moviegoers who work night shifts or prefer early‑morning entertainment. The review is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

If approved, theatres may need to adjust staffing, security, and cleaning schedules to accommodate the new operating hours, while regulators will monitor compliance with noise and curfew norms.
