The Tamil Nadu government has authorized theatres to schedule up to six screenings a day for newly released Tamil films, aiming to boost box‑office revenues.
The state government of Tamil Nadu announced that cinema halls can now run up to six shows per day for each newly released Tamil movie. The directive, issued by the Department of Information and Public Relations, comes into effect from the next release cycle and applies to all registered theatres across the state.
Officials said the move is intended to maximize revenue for producers and distributors while giving audiences more flexibility to watch films at convenient times. By increasing the number of daily slots, the administration hopes to counteract the drop in footfall that many theatres have reported in recent months.
Industry bodies, including the Tamil Film Producers Council and major multiplex chains, welcomed the decision, calling it a timely step to revive the regional film market. They expect the additional shows to translate into higher occupancy rates and better returns for upcoming releases.
The policy also requires theatres to adhere to existing safety and licensing norms, ensuring that the increased schedule does not compromise audience comfort or regulatory compliance.
