The Supreme Court has confirmed the Himachal Pradesh High Court ruling that expands the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation's authority, signalling stricter enforcement of drug regulations across India.

New Delhi, Sept 16 — In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court upheld a Himachal Pradesh High Court order that broadens the scope of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). The apex court ruled that the regulator can exercise enhanced powers to enforce compliance with drug safety standards, including the authority to conduct surprise inspections and impose penalties without prior notice.

The decision comes after a series of legal challenges questioning the extent of CDSCO's jurisdiction over pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors. By affirming the high court's view, the Supreme Court has effectively reinforced the regulator's mandate to curb substandard and counterfeit medicines.

Legal experts say the ruling will streamline enforcement actions, allowing CDSCO to act more swiftly against violations. Industry stakeholders are expected to review internal compliance protocols to align with the heightened regulatory expectations.

The judgment also underscores the judiciary's role in supporting public health safeguards, reinforcing the government's commitment to ensure the quality and safety of medicines nationwide.
