The Supreme Court criticised the Kerala government’s handling of the captive elephant Raman and directed officials to submit a detailed medical report.

The Supreme Court on Monday expressed strong displeasure with the Kerala state authorities over the custody conditions of Raman, a captive elephant. The apex court highlighted concerns that the animal’s welfare may not be adequately safeguarded under the current arrangements.

In its order, the court directed the Kerala forest department and related officials to furnish a comprehensive medical report on Raman’s health status. The report is expected to detail any injuries, illnesses, or treatment the elephant has received while in state custody.

The bench underscored that the welfare of captive wildlife is a legal responsibility of the state, and any lapse could attract further judicial scrutiny. The court’s directive aims to ensure that Raman receives appropriate care and that the state complies with wildlife protection norms.

The Kerala government has been asked to submit the requested medical documentation within a stipulated timeframe, after which the court will review the findings and decide on any further action.

This development comes amid growing public attention to the treatment of captive elephants in India, prompting calls for stricter oversight and transparent reporting.
