The Supreme Court criticised the Chhattisgarh High Court for reducing a murder conviction, saying the judges appeared unaware of the relevant IPC provisions.

The apex court took a stern view of a recent order by the Chhattisgarh High Court that lowered a murder conviction to a lesser offence. In its observations, the Supreme Court highlighted that the lower court appeared to have misapplied provisions of the Indian Penal Code, leading to an unjust downgrade of the charge.

The bench emphasized that judges must be well‑versed with IPC sections governing homicide, especially the distinction between murder (Section 302) and culpable homicide not amounting to murder (Section 304). It warned that any deviation without proper legal basis could undermine the criminal justice system.

The Supreme Court’s remarks come as part of a broader effort to ensure uniform interpretation of criminal law across Indian courts. No further remedial orders were disclosed in the brief statement, but the criticism signals that the matter may be revisited to align the conviction with the appropriate statutory provision.

Legal experts note that such interventions reinforce the need for continuous judicial training on statutory nuances, particularly in states where high courts handle a large volume of serious criminal cases.

The case underscores the judiciary’s role in safeguarding the integrity of criminal convictions and ensuring that victims’ rights are not compromised by procedural lapses.
