A Supreme Court-appointed panel has recommended a capacity study for tourism hubs in Himachal Pradesh and called for closer scrutiny of ongoing highway expansion projects in the state.

A panel constituted by the Supreme Court has advised that a detailed capacity assessment be carried out for the major tourism hubs in Himachal Pradesh. The recommendation comes amid growing concerns that unchecked development could strain local infrastructure and affect the ecological balance of popular hill destinations.

The panel, which includes senior judges and experts in tourism and urban planning, also urged the state government to subject new highway expansion projects to more rigorous review. It highlighted the need to evaluate environmental impact, land acquisition issues and the potential disruption to existing traffic patterns before granting clearances.

If implemented, the capacity study would map the carrying limits of key sites such as Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala, guiding future investments and visitor management strategies. The court's suggestion aims to ensure that tourism growth remains sustainable while safeguarding the region's natural heritage.

State officials have said they will consider the panel's advice and explore mechanisms to integrate the study into ongoing development plans. The move signals a heightened judicial focus on balancing economic development with environmental stewardship in the Himalayan state.
