The Supreme Court has directed the Rajasthan government to form a Special Investigation Team within three days to investigate illegal sand mining in the Lun, Joajari and Bandi rivers, citing environmental pollution concerns.

The apex court has taken a firm stance against illegal sand mining in the Lun, Joajari and Bandi rivers of Rajasthan. In a recent order, the Supreme Court instructed the state government to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by an officer of IGIP rank to probe the activities.

The court’s directive comes after mounting evidence of environmental degradation and pollution caused by unregulated sand extraction. The SIT is expected to conduct a comprehensive investigation, collect forensic evidence, and recommend punitive measures against offenders.

The Rajasthan government has been given a three‑day deadline to set up the team. Failure to comply could lead to further judicial intervention. The order underscores the judiciary’s commitment to safeguarding natural resources and enforcing environmental laws.

Environmental groups have welcomed the move, urging swift action to curb the damage to river ecosystems. The SIT’s findings will likely influence future policy on mining and river conservation in the state.
