Supreme Court Orders DNA Tests for Indians Killed Serving in Russian Army

India's Supreme Court has directed DNA testing for Indian nationals who died while serving in the Russian army and has instructed the Centre to appoint a nodal officer to assist families in filing compensation claims with Russian authorities.

Supreme Court of India, in a hearing on Monday, issued an order requiring DNA testing of Indian nationals who lost their lives while serving in the Russian army. The court said the tests are necessary to confirm the identities of the deceased and to facilitate any future legal or compensation proceedings.

In addition, the bench directed the Union Government to appoint a nodal officer. The officer will act as a liaison between the families of the deceased and Russian authorities, helping them to file compensation claims and navigate diplomatic channels.

The decision follows a growing number of cases where Indian citizens have been killed in foreign conflicts and families have struggled to obtain recognition or redress. By mandating DNA tests, the court aims to provide concrete evidence that can be used in international legal forums.

The ruling is expected to streamline the process for families seeking justice and may set a precedent for how India handles the deaths of its nationals abroad.
