Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of the Supreme Court criticised the large-scale removal of voter names from electoral rolls carried out under the special intensive revision process. He said the move threatens constitutional values and disenfranchises millions of citizens.
Justice Ujjal Bhuyan made his remarks during a hearing concerning the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. He pointed out that the deletion of names without proper verification undermines the democratic principle of universal adult franchise.
The judge stressed that the right to vote is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution and any mass removal must follow due process of law. He warned that arbitrary deletions could lead to the disenfranchisement of eligible voters.
Justice Bhuyan urged election authorities to ensure that no citizen is denied the right to vote without a fair and transparent procedure. He called for immediate steps to restore any wrongly deleted names before the upcoming elections.
