The Supreme Court observed that the rules governing the appointment of the Jharkhand Director General of Police appear to be contrary to an earlier judicial decision.

The Supreme Court on Monday examined the procedural framework used to appoint the Director General of Police (DGP) in Jharkhand. The bench noted that the rules currently applied seem to be in direct conflict with a prior Supreme Court decision that laid down guidelines for such appointments.

The court's observation was described as "prima facie" evidence that the state government's approach may violate established legal precedent. While the judgment did not halt the appointment process, it signaled that the matter would be scrutinised further to ensure compliance with the earlier ruling.

Legal experts suggest that the state may have to revise its appointment guidelines to align with the Supreme Court's earlier directives, lest it face a challenge in a higher forum. The DGP post, crucial for law‑and‑order management in the mineral‑rich state, remains under close watch as the judicial review proceeds.
