The Supreme Court has ordered the establishment of a nationwide digital system to record road crashes, aiming to curb fraudulent accident claims.

In a recent judgment, the Supreme Court of India instructed the Union and state governments to develop a unified digital platform that will capture details of every road accident across the country. The order seeks to create a single source of truth for crash data, accessible to law‑enforcement agencies, insurers and the judiciary.

The court highlighted that fake accident claims have become a growing problem, inflating insurance payouts and burdening the legal system. By maintaining real‑time, verifiable records of crash circumstances, the digital network is expected to deter fraudulent filings and streamline compensation processes.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in coordination with police departments and insurance regulators, has been asked to submit a detailed implementation plan, including technical specifications and data‑privacy safeguards. The Supreme Court emphasized that the system should be operational promptly to address the mounting concerns over bogus claims.

If successfully rolled out, the database could also aid policymakers in analysing accident trends, improving road‑safety measures and allocating resources more effectively.
