Supreme Court clears way for Bhopal's long‑delayed master plan draft

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to publish the draft of Bhopal's 21‑year pending master plan, while sealing operations in unauthorised colonies will continue.
In a recent judgment, the Supreme Court of India granted permission for the government to release the draft of Bhopal's master plan, a document that has been under preparation for more than two decades. The court's order removes a major legal hurdle that had stalled the plan since it was first proposed 21 years ago.
The draft, once made public, will guide the city's future growth, zoning, infrastructure upgrades and land‑use policies. Urban planners and local authorities expect the release to accelerate development projects that have been on hold, aiming to improve civic amenities and attract investment.
At the same time, the court reiterated that sealing of illegal constructions in unauthorised settlements will continue. Officials have been instructed to maintain the ongoing sealing drive to enforce building regulations and prevent further encroachments.
Stakeholders, including resident welfare associations, have welcomed the clarity on the master plan while urging that the sealing process be carried out with adequate notice and rehabilitation measures for affected families.
