Supreme Court Allows Delhi High Court to Hear Coal Block Scam Appeals

The Supreme Court has amended a 12‑year‑old directive, permitting appeals in coal block scam cases to be filed before the Delhi High Court instead of only before the apex court.
The apex court today relaxed a long‑standing order that had required all appeals in coal block scam cases to be heard only by the Supreme Court. Under the new ruling, parties can now file appeals against trial court acquittals or convictions before the Delhi High Court.
The decision revises a directive issued twelve years ago that made the Supreme Court the sole forum for such appeals. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal had earlier argued that the apex court should not be the first appeal venue in these matters.
The Supreme Court will categorize the pending cases and schedule hearings from August 18, allowing the Delhi High Court to take up the appeals moving forward.
