Farmers led by Karnataka Rajya Rythu Sangha and the Green Army have kept roads blocked in Kalaburagi and Belagavi, pressing for a minimum sugarcane price of Rs 5,500 per tonne and higher incentives.

Sugarcane growers in Karnataka's Kalaburagi and Belagavi districts have intensified their protest by maintaining a highway blockade, demanding a minimum price of Rs 5,500 per tonne and additional incentive payments. The demonstration is being organised by the Karnataka Rajya Rythu Sangha and the Green Army, two farmer bodies that have mobilised large numbers of cultivators across the two regions.

The blockade, which began earlier this week, has continued unabated, disrupting traffic on major arterial roads. While the central government’s decision to set up an investigative committee was welcomed by the protesters, they have made it clear that they will not lift the blockade until an official revision of the sugarcane price is announced.

Farmers argue that the current market rates are insufficient to cover production costs and that the proposed minimum price is essential for the viability of sugarcane cultivation. They also seek higher incentive funds to offset rising input expenses.

Authorities have reported that the protest remains peaceful but have warned of potential legal action if the blockade persists beyond a reasonable period. The state government is in talks with farmer representatives to seek a swift resolution and avoid further disruption to transport and commerce.
