Stone‑pelting erupts in Ujjain as police use tear gas over Shahi Mosque demolition

During the Singhasth‑2028 road‑widening work in Ujjain, protesters pelted stones at police after a portion of the historic Shahi Mosque was removed, prompting tear‑gas deployment and arrests of ten people.
Ujjain witnessed a fresh outbreak of stone‑pelting on Tuesday as workers began removing a section of the 18th‑century Shahi Mosque to make way for the Singhasth‑2028 road‑widening project. Residents and activists gathered near the mosque, hurling stones at police personnel who were stationed to oversee the demolition.
Police responded by firing tear‑gas shells to disperse the crowd and prevent further damage to the heritage structure. The use of the chemical agent forced the protesters to retreat, but the confrontation continued for several minutes, causing a temporary shutdown of traffic on the main thoroughfare.
Law enforcement officials later filed FIRs against ten individuals, including five social‑media influencers who had been documenting the protest online, and five others who arrived from outside the city. All ten were taken into custody for alleged rioting and obstruction of public order.
