State to Seek GI Tag for Indigenous ‘Pipyri’ Cucumber

The state government announced plans to file a Geographical Indication application to protect the native ‘Pipyri’ cucumber variety.
The government of an Indian state has decided to submit a Geographical Indication (GI) application for the ‘Pipyri’ cucumber, a variety cultivated locally for generations. Officials said the move aims to legally recognise the cucumber’s unique characteristics linked to its region of origin.
A GI tag would help differentiate the ‘Pipyri’ cucumber from other market varieties, potentially allowing farmers to command better prices and protect the crop from imitation. The application will be prepared by the state’s agriculture department in coordination with local growers.
The department plans to forward the documentation to the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, which oversees GI registrations in India. Once granted, the tag could also be used in promotional campaigns to boost the region’s agricultural branding.
Stakeholders, including farmer associations, have welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a step toward preserving indigenous produce and enhancing rural incomes.
