On November 1, six Indian states—Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana—mark their foundation day, commemorating the historic reorganisation of states in 1956 and 1966.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has highlighted November 1 as the official foundation day for six Indian states that were created during two major phases of state reorganisation. The first wave came with the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which gave birth to Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka (then Mysore), Kerala and Madhya Pradesh on that date.
A decade later, the Punjab Reorganisation Act of 1966 carved out Punjab and Haryana from the erstwhile larger Punjab, also assigning the date of November 1 as their day of formation. Each of these states now observes the day with flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs and public addresses by chief ministers.
Educational institutions and media outlets across the country are running special features on the historical context of the reorganisation, emphasizing how linguistic and administrative considerations shaped modern India's federal map. The celebrations serve both as a reminder of the nation's unity in diversity and as an occasion for citizens to reflect on regional development since 1956 and 1966.
Authorities have urged citizens to observe the day peacefully, respecting local guidelines for public gatherings. The foundation day also provides an opportunity for state governments to showcase progress in infrastructure, health and education sectors.
