Amid complaints of illegal sand extraction, the Shahdol Superintendent of Police personally inspected suspected sites and discovered a massive sand dump in the Sohagpur region, prompting a referral to the mineral department for verification.
The Shahdol Superintendent of Police (SP) took direct action after receiving multiple complaints about illegal sand mining and transportation in the district. Accompanied by officials, the SP visited three suspected locations in the Sohagpur block—Narwar, Bijouri and Kshirsagar—to assess the extent of the activity.
During the on‑site checks, authorities uncovered a sizeable heap of sand that appeared to have been illegally extracted and stored. The dump, described as unusually large, raised concerns about environmental damage and loss of revenue for the state.
The SP has forwarded a formal request to the state's mineral department, seeking an official verification of the sand's legality and potential action against those responsible. The department is expected to conduct a detailed examination and, if required, initiate legal proceedings.
Local residents, who have long voiced concerns over unregulated mining, welcomed the police intervention, hoping it will curb further exploitation of the region's natural resources.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have indicated that additional inspections of other vulnerable sites in Shahdol may follow.
