Heavy snowfall was reported in several districts of Uttarakhand, prompting weather alerts and travel advisories.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued a weather alert on Monday after receiving reports of snowfall across multiple districts of Uttarakhand. Areas such as Chamoli, Pithoragarh and parts of Almora recorded up to 10 centimetres of fresh snow, causing a sudden drop in temperatures to near freezing levels.
Local authorities have warned commuters about slippery roads and reduced visibility, especially on mountain passes that connect remote villages. Police and disaster management teams have been deployed to clear major highways and assist stranded travelers.
The snowfall, while attracting tourists to the Himalayan foothills, has also raised concerns among farmers as the cold spell may affect early sowing activities. Officials have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid non-essential travel, and follow updates from the meteorological department.
The alert remains in effect for the next 48 hours, with forecasts indicating a possible continuation of snow showers in higher altitudes before conditions improve later in the week.
