A coalition of Silchar lawyers has revived a 54‑year‑old request for a dedicated Gauhati High Court bench, formally presenting a memorandum to the Assam Governor.

Silchar’s legal community has once again pressed for the creation of a permanent Gauhati High Court bench in the city, a demand that dates back more than five decades. The lawyers’ association, representing counsel from across the Bar, argues that the existing jurisdictional arrangement forces litigants to travel long distances, imposing financial and logistical burdens.

On Monday, the association submitted a detailed memorandum to Governor Jagdish Mukhi, outlining the historical context, the growing caseload in southern Assam, and the anticipated benefits of a local bench. The document cites previous petitions and parliamentary discussions, emphasizing that the bench would enhance access to justice for residents of the Barak Valley.

While the Governor’s office acknowledged receipt of the memorandum, officials indicated that the proposal would now be examined by the state’s law department and the Supreme Court’s administrative committee. No immediate timeline was provided, but the lawyers signaled readiness to pursue further legal and political avenues if required.

The renewed demand reflects broader regional aspirations for greater judicial infrastructure, echoing similar calls in other parts of the Northeast. Stakeholders hope that the renewed push will finally translate into concrete action after 54 years of advocacy.
