Sikkim’s inaugural government medical college will commence its first academic session on September 18, marking a milestone in the state’s healthcare education.

Sikkim’s first government medical college is set to launch its inaugural academic session on September 18, a development that promises to transform medical education in the state.

Located in the capital city of Gangtok, the new campus will offer the MBBS programme and related clinical training. The college’s establishment follows years of planning and investment aimed at reducing the need for students to travel to distant centres for medical studies.

The institution is expected to admit a cohort of students who will receive classroom instruction as well as hands‑on experience in the attached teaching hospital. The facility will also serve as a hub for research and community health initiatives.

By training doctors locally, the college is poised to improve access to quality healthcare across Sikkim’s remote districts and strengthen the state’s medical workforce.
