Sikkim and West Bengal have signed a reciprocal transport agreement that will allow cross‑border taxi operations and has doubled the number of permits available to taxi operators in both states.

Sikkim and West Bengal have entered into a reciprocal transport agreement that permits taxi operators to run cross‑border services between the two states. The pact, signed by officials from both sides, also doubles the quota of taxi permits available in each state.

The agreement is aimed at improving connectivity for commuters travelling between the hills of Sikkim and the plains of West Bengal. By allowing taxis to operate freely across the border, the states hope to boost local economies and provide a more convenient travel option for residents.

Officials from both states expressed optimism that the new arrangement will streamline transport services and reduce travel time for passengers. They also highlighted the potential for increased revenue for taxi operators.

The transport ministry has said it will monitor the implementation of the agreement closely and make adjustments as needed to ensure smooth operation.
