A Sikkim Member of Parliament urged the central government to fast‑track the Sevoke‑Rangpo railway project, citing its importance for the state's connectivity and development.

New Delhi – In a recent statement, a Member of Parliament from Sikkim emphasized the need for quicker rail connectivity to the hill state, specifically calling for the early completion of the Sevoke‑Rangpo railway line. The MP highlighted that the 44‑kilometre link, which will connect the state’s border with West Bengal, is crucial for facilitating passenger and freight movement, tourism, and strategic logistics.

The parliamentary representative noted that the project, part of the broader Indian Railways' Northeast connectivity plan, has faced delays due to challenging terrain and land‑acquisition issues. By expediting construction, the MP argued, Sikkim could benefit from reduced travel time to major metros and improved access to markets for local produce.

The central government has yet to announce a revised timeline, but the MP urged the Ministry of Railways to allocate additional resources and prioritize the line in upcoming budget cycles. Stakeholders, including local business groups and tourism operators, have welcomed the appeal, viewing the railway as a catalyst for economic growth in the region.

The Sevoke‑Rangpo line is also expected to integrate with the upcoming Vande Bharat Express services, potentially linking Sikkim directly with the national high‑speed network. As the project moves forward, monitoring its progress will be essential for assessing its impact on the state's development trajectory.
