The Sikkim government announced that the journey between Siliguri and Gangtok, currently about four hours, will be cut to roughly ninety minutes.
New Delhi – The minister of Sikkim announced that the travel time between Siliguri in West Bengal and the state capital Gangtok will be reduced dramatically. According to the statement, the current four‑hour journey is expected to shrink to about ninety minutes once the planned improvements are completed.
The reduction is attributed to upgrades on the existing road corridor linking the two cities, which will allow vehicles to maintain higher speeds and encounter fewer bottlenecks. The minister emphasized that the faster connection will boost tourism, trade and emergency services across the region.
No specific completion date was disclosed, but officials said the project is progressing under the state’s infrastructure development plan. Stakeholders, including transport operators and local businesses, welcomed the news, citing potential economic benefits for both West Bengal and Sikkim.
