The Sikkim Integrated Urban Development Project, backed by the Asian Development Bank, has begun implementation, marking the start of a statewide urban upgrade programme.

Sikkim has officially commenced the implementation phase of the Sikkim Integrated Urban Development Project (SIUDP) in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The initiative is designed to modernise urban infrastructure across the state, targeting improvements in water supply, waste management, road networks and public amenities.

State officials said the project will be rolled out in phases, beginning with pilot towns before expanding to larger urban centres. The collaboration with ADB brings technical expertise and financing that aim to accelerate the transformation of Sikkim's cities into more livable and sustainable environments.

The launch was marked by a ceremony attended by senior representatives of the Sikkim government and ADB, who highlighted the project's alignment with broader national urban development goals. Stakeholders expect the programme to generate employment opportunities and stimulate local economies as construction and related activities commence.

While detailed timelines and budget allocations were not disclosed, authorities emphasized that the project will adhere to environmental safeguards, reflecting Sikkim's commitment to eco‑friendly growth.

The SIUDP-ADB implementation signals a significant step for the state’s urban agenda, positioning Sikkim as a model for integrated development in the Himalayan region.
