Sikkim has installed monitoring sensors on its glacial lakes as a precautionary measure following severe floods in neighboring Nepal, aiming to predict and mitigate future water‑related hazards.

Sikkim has responded to the recent catastrophic floods in Nepal by installing advanced monitoring sensors on its glacial lakes. The sensors will record water levels, temperature and melt rates, providing real‑time data to scientists and local authorities. Earlier in 2020, a sudden rise in lake water caused a flash flood that damaged villages in the state, underscoring the need for early warning systems. The state government, in partnership with the National Centre for Integrated Water Resources Development, plans to expand the network to all major lakes by 2025.
