The Chief Minister of Sikkim inaugurated the National Disaster Response Force’s fourth ‘Shikhar’ mountaineering mission, dispatching a team to scale Mt Jongsong.

Sikkim's Chief Minister officially launched the National Disaster Response Force's (NDRF) fourth mountaineering expedition, dubbed "Shikhar," aimed at climbing Mt Jongsong in the eastern Himalayas. The ceremony took place in the state capital, where the CM hoisted the expedition flag and addressed the assembled rescue personnel and officials.

The "Shikhar" team comprises seasoned NDRF commandos, experienced mountaineers and support staff, all trained for high‑altitude rescue operations. This marks the fourth time the force is undertaking a dedicated climbing mission, reflecting its expanding role in disaster preparedness for remote mountainous regions.

Mt Jongsong, situated near the Sikkim‑Tibet border, is known for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather. The expedition is scheduled to commence its ascent within the next few days, with a planned duration of two weeks, after which the team will return with valuable data on terrain and rescue logistics.

State officials highlighted that the mission will also serve as a training platform for future disaster response teams, enhancing the NDRF's capability to operate in extreme conditions across the Himalayas.
