Sikkim’s chief minister highlighted the need to protect the state’s rivers and their aquatic ecosystems, urging immediate conservation measures.

Sikkim’s chief minister emphasized the critical importance of preserving the state’s river systems during a recent public address. He warned that unchecked pollution and unsustainable development threaten both water quality and the rich aquatic biodiversity that the hills support.

The minister noted that Sikkim’s rivers, many of which feed the Brahmaputra basin, host several endemic fish and invertebrate species. These water bodies also provide livelihoods for local communities and are integral to the state’s hydro‑electric potential.

To address the challenges, the government plans to tighten effluent standards, expand real‑time water‑quality monitoring, and involve village councils in river‑bank restoration projects. Emphasis was placed on promoting eco‑friendly tourism and encouraging industries to adopt cleaner technologies.

The chief minister called on citizens, NGOs, and private stakeholders to collaborate in safeguarding the rivers, stressing that long‑term ecological health is essential for Sikkim’s sustainable development.
