A government-appointed committee will examine tunnel construction in Shimla after blasting operations caused structural cracks.

Blasting activities carried out as part of a tunnel project in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, have resulted in visible cracks in the surrounding rock and concrete structures. Local authorities reported the damage early on, prompting concerns over the safety of the ongoing work.

In response, the state government has constituted a technical committee comprising engineers, geologists and senior officials to conduct a thorough inspection of the tunnel site. The committee is tasked with assessing the extent of the damage, identifying the cause of the cracks and recommending corrective measures.

Officials said the inspection will be completed within a few weeks and that any necessary halts or modifications to the blasting schedule will be implemented to prevent further deterioration. The move aims to ensure public safety and maintain the project’s timeline while adhering to engineering standards.
