Andhra Pradesh is confronting a severe drought that has depleted reservoirs and threatened agricultural output, officials say.
State officials reported that rainfall deficits over the past months have left large parts of Andhra Pradesh facing acute water scarcity. Reservoir levels have fallen to historically low marks, prompting the government to issue advisories for water conservation across urban and rural areas.
Farmers in the drought‑prone districts are reporting wilting crops and reduced yields, especially for paddy and millets that depend on monsoon rains. The agriculture department has begun distributing drought‑relief kits and urging the use of drought‑resistant seed varieties.
The state disaster management agency has activated contingency plans, including the mobilization of tankers to supply drinking water to the most affected villages. Authorities are also monitoring groundwater extraction to prevent further depletion.
Experts warn that if the dry spell continues, the region could see a sharp rise in farmer distress and a potential impact on food prices nationwide. The government is reviewing additional relief measures, including credit support and insurance payouts for the farming community.
