Seven High-Risk Glacial Lakes Threaten Villages and Army Camps in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Seven glacial lakes in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh have been classified as high‑risk for a possible outburst flood, according to a recent assessment. The lakes, formed by meltwater from surrounding glaciers, sit at elevations that make them vulnerable to sudden breaching during heavy rainfall or seismic activity.

Experts warn that an overflow could unleash a flash flood that would sweep through low‑lying villages downstream, threatening lives, property and agricultural land. The same floodwaters could also inundate Indian Army camps stationed in the region, disrupting defence operations and logistics.

The army and state disaster management authorities are now monitoring water levels and have begun drafting evacuation and early‑warning protocols. Preliminary measures include installing remote sensors, strengthening embankments where feasible, and conducting community awareness drills to minimise potential loss of life.

While no immediate danger has been reported, officials stress that the situation requires continuous vigilance, especially during the monsoon season when the risk of glacial lake outburst floods rises sharply.
