Scientists Identify New Sunflower Species in Arunachal Pradesh

A team of botanists has documented a previously unknown sunflower species in the eastern Himalayan state of Arunachal Pradesh, expanding the region's floral diversity.
Researchers from a leading Indian botanical institute announced the discovery of a hitherto unknown sunflower species during a field survey in Arunachal Pradesh's subtropical forest zones. The plant, which exhibits distinct petal coloration and seed head morphology, was collected from a remote valley near the Namdapha National Park.
Detailed morphological analysis, complemented by DNA barcoding, confirmed that the specimen does not match any described species within the genus Helianthus. The scientists noted unique traits such as a deeper orange hue, elongated ray florets, and a higher seed oil content compared to common cultivated varieties.
The finding adds to the rich biodiversity of the eastern Himalayas and underscores the need for continued taxonomic exploration in the region. Conservationists say that documenting new species is vital for formulating habitat protection strategies, especially as climate change threatens fragile ecosystems.
