Renowned Odisha sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik crafted a large sand sculpture titled ‘Prayers for Nepal’ to show solidarity with flood‑hit Nepal, as relief efforts continue across the Himalayan nation.
Sudarsan Pattnaik, the internationally acclaimed sand artist from Odisha, has completed a new sand sculpture named ‘Prayers for Nepal’ on the beaches of Puri. The artwork, measuring several metres in height, depicts stylised hands and a symbolic representation of Nepal's mountains, intended as a visual prayer for those affected by the recent catastrophic floods.
The floods, triggered by unprecedented monsoon rains, have swept across Nepal's Terai and hill regions, causing extensive damage to homes, infrastructure and agriculture. Relief agencies are mobilising resources, but the scale of the disaster has drawn sympathy from neighbouring countries.
Pattnaik, known for his socially relevant sand art, said the piece aims to convey hope and solidarity, urging the Indian public to support relief initiatives. The sculpture will remain on the beach for a few days before being dismantled, after which Pattnaik plans to donate the sand to environmental causes.
Local authorities have welcomed the gesture, highlighting the role of cultural expressions in fostering cross‑border empathy during natural calamities.
