The Gujarat government has cleared a ₹71,000 crore coastal development programme that will see shipyards built at four sites and six new ports sanctioned.
The state cabinet of Gujarat has given the green light to a massive ₹71,000 crore initiative aimed at transforming the state's 1,600‑kilometre coastline. The programme is designed to boost maritime trade, create jobs and position Gujarat as a leading hub for shipbuilding and logistics.
Under the plan, four new shipyards will be established at strategically chosen points along the coast, leveraging existing industrial clusters and deep‑water access. These facilities are expected to cater to both commercial and defence vessels, reducing reliance on foreign shipyards.
In addition, six new ports have been approved, expanding the current network of major harbours. The new ports will handle bulk cargo, containers and passenger traffic, thereby decongesting existing terminals and opening new trade routes.
The project will be financed through a mix of state funds, central assistance and private sector participation. Officials anticipate that the infrastructure boost will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs and add significantly to Gujarat's GDP over the next decade.
