The Tamil Nadu meteorological department has raised a red alert for Chennai, warning of extremely heavy rain in the coming hours.
The state’s weather bureau has upgraded Chennai’s weather warning to a red alert, signalling the likelihood of exceptionally heavy rainfall within the next few hours. Meteorologists attribute the surge to a deep low-pressure system moving across the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to dump large volumes of water over the city and surrounding districts.
Authorities have activated emergency response teams, mobilising additional police patrols and disaster management personnel to monitor vulnerable areas. Drainage pumps are being run at full capacity, and the municipal corporation has ordered the clearing of clogged canals and stormwater drains to mitigate flooding risks.
Public services are being pre‑emptively adjusted: schools and colleges in high‑risk zones are advised to remain closed, while railway and bus services may face delays or cancellations. Residents have been urged to stay indoors, avoid low‑lying areas, and keep emergency kits ready. The department will issue hourly updates through its official channels as the situation evolves.
