The Reserve Bank of India is set to publish the Consumer Price Index and Wholesale Price Index this week, a key focus for policymakers and investors as they gauge inflationary pressures.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will publish the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of October on Thursday, followed by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for the same period on Friday. These releases are expected to be closely monitored by market participants and policy makers as they provide a snapshot of retail and wholesale inflation trends.

In recent weeks, headline inflation has hovered around 5.5%, with core inflation slightly lower. The CPI data will reveal whether the upward pressure on consumer prices has eased, while the WPI will shed light on price movements at the wholesale level.

The RBI’s monetary policy committee has signalled that it will keep the repo rate unchanged until it is confident that inflation is sustainably below the 4% target. The upcoming data will therefore play a crucial role in shaping the committee’s next meeting agenda.

Investors are watching the releases for any indication of a shift in the RBI’s stance. A softer CPI could reduce the likelihood of an interest rate hike, whereas a higher WPI might prompt the central bank to maintain a cautious approach.

The market has already priced in a modest expectation of a 0.25% rate hike in the next policy meeting, but the CPI and WPI figures will determine whether that expectation holds or needs adjustment.
